Avant Garde Jewelers has been creating custom jewelry in Austin, Texas, since 1976. Our custom design process allows you to create a one-of-a-kind piece from an idea, inspiration photo, existing jewelry, diamond, or gemstone.
We design custom engagement rings, wedding bands, anniversary rings, gemstone jewelry, pendants, and other one-of-a-kind pieces. We also specialize in heirloom jewelry redesign, transforming meaningful diamonds, gemstones, and older jewelry into something new while preserving the story behind the original piece.
Our team works with you throughout the design process, from the initial concept and CAD design to stone selection and the finished piece. Whether you're starting from scratch or redesigning jewelry you already own, your piece is created around your style, preferences, and budget.
Custom jewelry doesn't necessarily mean a higher price. Because your piece is created specifically for you, you aren't paying the traditional designer-to-retailer markup associated with many branded jewelry collections. We'll work with you to create a custom piece that fits both your vision and your budget.
Our Custom Jewelry Design Process
Creating custom jewelry should be exciting, not overwhelming. At Avant Garde Jewelers, we guide you through each step of the process, from your initial idea to the finished piece.
You can start with a photo, sketch, existing piece of jewelry, heirloom diamond or gemstone, or simply an idea. We'll talk with you about your style, preferences, budget, and how you'd like the finished piece to look and feel.
From there, we'll develop your design using CAD technology, allowing you to see your custom jewelry design before it is created. Once the design is approved, your piece moves into production, where the details come together to create jewelry made specifically for you.
1. Design Consultation & Inspiration
Your custom jewelry design begins with an in-store consultation where we'll talk about your ideas, style, and budget. Bring anything that inspires you—photos, sketches, Pinterest boards, an existing piece of jewelry, or even just an idea.
We'll explore the possibilities together, including your choice of diamonds or gemstones, metal, setting style, and design details. From there, we'll sketch and refine your ideas until we've captured the look you want and are ready to move on to the next step.
2. CAD Design & Review
Once we've finalized the direction of your design, we'll bring your ideas to life using CAD (computer-aided design) and/or a model, depending on the piece. This step allows you to see the shape, proportions, stone placement, and important details of your custom jewelry before it is made.
Within days of your consultation, you'll have an opportunity to review the design with us and make any adjustments you'd like. We'll fine-tune the details until you're completely happy with how your piece will look. Nothing moves forward until you've approved the design and are ready for us to begin creating your jewelry.
3. Casting Your Custom Design
Once you've approved your design, it's time to bring it to life in the precious metal you've selected. Your custom piece is carefully cast in your choice of gold or platinum and professionally polished in preparation for stone setting and final finishing.
Have old gold jewelry you're no longer wearing? We offer 90% of the gold value as credit toward your new custom piece. This allows you to put the value of jewelry you already own toward creating something new you'll love and wear.
Once the casting is complete, your custom piece is ready for the next stage—setting your diamonds or gemstones and completing the final details.
4. Stone Setting, Finishing & Appraisal
Now it's time for the finishing touches. Our jewelers carefully set your diamonds and gemstones, bringing together all of the details you've chosen throughout the design process.
Your piece is then finished and polished to highlight the metal, texture, stones, and design details. Before your jewelry is ready for you, we carefully inspect the setting, craftsmanship, and finish to make sure everything looks just as it should.
Every completed custom jewelry design also includes a written appraisal for insurance purposes, providing you with documentation of your finished piece.
The result is a one-of-a-kind piece created especially for you—ready to wear, enjoy, and make part of your story.
